Who Is Tengen Uzui?

Everything You Need To Know About Tengen Uzui - Demon Slayer - ShonenRoad (3)

Tengen Uzui is a pivotal character in the fantasy horror manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, which streamed from 2016-2020 and was adapted into an anime series beginning in 2019. He takes on the role of the secondary protagonist in both the Entertainment District Arc and the anime version of season two.

Demon Slayer Corps’ Tengen serves as the organization’s Sound Pillar. He is one of the most formidable warriors in the franchise. Since he is the Entertainment District Arc’s primary impetus, he gets the spotlight from Chapter 77 all the way until Chapter 99. He is voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi in Japanese and Ray Chase in English.

During his battle against the Rank 6 demon Gyutaro, the majority of Tengen’s past was brought to light. During this battle, the demon questioned Tengen’s capacity to withstand the effects of poison, and in response, Tengen decided to divulge his childhood in order to answer the question.

It was revealed that he was a descendent of shinobi from the Edo period of Japan’s history. As the ninja society fell apart, his father went insane and began a ruthless training regimen for his children in order to carry on the legacy of his forebears. Tengen was the youngest of eight children, but by the time he turned 15, only two of his siblings were still alive. The remaining members of the group did not only perish as a result of excessive training; in addition, their father made them kill one another in a battle to the death.

Tengen was disgusted by this callous treatment of one’s family and intended to argue with his father about it. Before he could do so, he had a rude awakening when he found out that his only surviving younger brother turned out to be an exact duplicate of their father.

This was a devastating realization for him. He was an advocate of the harsh training and felt that it was necessary to protect the honor of the family. Tengen was aware at that time that the family had been wiped out entirely because all of his younger siblings had been murdered.

His father and brother didn’t place any importance on having blood ties to their children and just saw their spouses as a means to an end (having children). Tengen accidentally killed two of his siblings before he realized what was going on, and then he fled the clan in order to escape the consequences of his actions.

After that, he found his three future brides and instructed them in the ways of a true warrior. He eventually became a member of the Demon Slayer Corps after assisting Kagaya Ubuyashiki. Tengen advanced rapidly through the ranks of the organisation, and in recent years he has become the Sound Hashira, one of the most powerful members of the group.

Tengen Uzui’s Physical Appearance

Tengen is an extremely tall and muscular man with tanned skin, broad shoulders, and white hair. He has a fair complexion. His hair is irregular in length, with the longest strands reaching his shoulders. It is styled with three more conspicuous clumps of shorter hair that arch up to fall as bangs between his eyes and on either side of his face.

His hair is cut in a spiky pattern. His eyes are a dark brown colour and appear to be slanted inwards. He has one long eyelash that flows to the opposite side of his face from each of his maroon eyes. It has been recognised by a great number of women, including Zenitsu, that he possesses a very appealing appearance. Because of this, he now employs his good looks as a weapon in his tasks whenever it is essential to influence others.

Tengen dresses in a sleeveless and dark turquoise variant of the normal Demon Slayer costume while he is serving in the Demon Slayer Corps. He also wears a wrap of burgundy cloth around his calves, with his tattsuke-bakama pants tucked in and white-strapped Zri. In addition, he has two substantial gold rings wrapped around his upper arms, what appears to be a pair of fingerless blue gloves wrapped around his middle finger with a band of white, and another set of thinner gold rings wrapped around his wrists, this time with two on each side.

He also has a band of white wrapped around his middle finger. In addition to this, Tengen wears a white head-wrap that completely conceals his hair, revealing only a thin ponytail that falls behind his head from between its layers.

This head-wrap is adorned with a large headband of pale grey that is decorated by six light pink gemstones: three large gemstones arranged in a line and three smaller gemstones arranged in a triangle to the far left of the headband. Along with what appears to be red eye makeup around his left eye, which consists of alternating large and small dots that run inwards towards his eye, he also wears what appears to be a chain of smaller, pale blue gemstones that hang from each side of this headdress, framing his face. In addition, this headdress frames his face.

Tengen alters his appearance when he is forced to retire from the Demon Slayer Corps as a result of the injuries he incurred while battling Gyutaro, one of the Upper Rank Six demons, in order to accommodate the loss of his left eye and hand. His hair is now let to flow loosely past his shoulders, and he wears a long, aqua coloured yukata and a black haori. In place of his previous head-wrap, he now wears a dark eyepatch decorated with what appear to be the remaining jewels left over from his previous headdress.

Tengen’s Outstanding Personality Traits

Tengen is an eccentric and loud person who has a constant desire to be “flamboyant.” He has a need for everything to be flashy and remarkable, and he even proclaims that he is the god of showmanship and celebrations. This is shown when he gets excited, imagining how “flamboyant” it would be if Tanjiro Kamado’s blood vessels exploded.

He tries to forcibly haul Aoi Kanzaki off with him to the Entertainment District so she can unwillingly help him with a dangerous mission, even spanking her. Both of these examples show that he is manipulative. Tengen is very demanding of others as a result of his exuberant and flamboyant personality.

During the Hashira Training Arc, Tengen treated the Demon Slayers very harshly and insulted them for having no substance when they couldn’t survive his stamina training. He did this because the Demon Slayers couldn’t endure his training. In addition to this, he despises the concept of unspectacular things, which is demonstrated by the fact that the Hashira openly displays his hatred for simplicity.

He is typically seen talking arrogantly, proclaiming that he is “god” in front of Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke, even calling them trash and declaring that they must become whatever he tells them to become if he tells them to become dogs and if he tells them to become monkeys, they must become whatever he tells them to become if he tells them to become dogs.

Everything You Need To Know About Tengen Uzui - Demon Slayer - ShonenRoad (6)

Tengen even insists that the trio always show him favour and deference by grovelling before him, pleading with him for favours, and making an effort to impress him as much as possible. This was also demonstrated in their first encounter with Upper-Rank Six, Gyutaro, when he boasted to Gyutaro that he was in peak physical condition despite the fact that he had been severely poisoned.

However, Tengen also has a caring side that is hidden under his flamboyant facade. This is a side that Tengen only shows to those that are extremely close to him, most notably his three wives, Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru. Tengen is shown to truly care for his wives, as he praises and encourages Makio and Suma after their undercover mission and reassures Hinatsuru that she has completed her mission, and tells her to get out of harm.

In addition to this, Tengen tells them that they should place a high value on their lives above all others because he regards them as priceless. Tengen’s relationship with Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke improves as a direct result of the events that transpired throughout the Entertainment District Arc.

Tengen looks up to people like Kyojuro Rengoku, and he is observed to compare himself to other Hashira, which suggests that he has some kind of inferiority problem. Kyojuro Rengoku is Tengen’s hero. This is demonstrated even further by the fact that he categorically rejects the notion that he might have been endowed with genius and that he consistently assures himself that he would never attain the same level of greatness as Kyojuro.

Tengen is seen to have feelings of remorse at the fact that he has, over the course of his life, been responsible for the loss of so many people’s lives. Kagaya Ubuyashiki complimented Tengen for the difficult route he took and the fact that he faced forward and battled to defend human lives despite carrying all of his conflicts and contradictions behind his loud and confident facade. This earned Kagaya the respect of Tengen, who in turn respected Kagaya. Tengen has abandoned this philosophy in spite of the fact that he is a shinobi, which has historically placed the utmost importance on successfully completing the job. He did this after observing how it affected his family.

Now, he is of the opinion that those under his direction, whether they be his wives or the Demon Slayers, ought to place a higher priority on their own lives as well as the lives of those who are uninvolved in their missions than either their own or his own. Tengen detested the idea that he would turn out like his brother or father, who were indifferent to the lives of human beings, and he yearned with all his might to reject the values that his family had instilled in him.

All You Need To Know About Tengen Uzui’s Powers and Abilities

Everything You Need To Know About Tengen Uzui - Demon Slayer - ShonenRoad (7)

Tengen is an extremely powerful and skillful combatant thanks to his status as a Hashira in the Demon Slayer Corps. He is the Hashira with the quickest running speed. He has shown tremendous feats of strength and speed in the physical realm, ranking as the second physically strongest Hashira of the present generation while also being the Hashira with the fastest running speed overall.

In terms of combat prowess, he was on par with the likes of Daki and Gyutaro, both of which are Upper-Rank demons that have engaged in battle against and vanquished a significant number of Hashira in the past. Tengen was also able to easily decapitate Daki without her realizing it, to the point that he didn’t even recognize her as an Upper-Rank demon at all.

This was due to the fact that Tengen’s ability was so great. It is remarkable that he was able to fend off the combined efforts of Daki and Gyutaro while being infected by a poison that, under normal circ*mstances, would kill someone instantaneously. In the process, he even managed to protect onlookers from the effects of the poison. Tengen has also demonstrated a high level of expertise and precision in the use of explosives, causing the least amount of harm to his surrounds while inflicting the most amount of damage on his adversaries.

Because of his training as a shinobi, Tengen possesses superior strategic abilities as well as heightened senses, especially his hearing, which proved to be of tremendous use to him during the course of the conflict. Tengen was able to fight the Upper Rank on even terms despite the fact that he had lost his left hand to Gyutaro.

This was made possible by Tengen’s successful completion of the Musical Score, which enabled him to deflect Gyutaro’s attacks, cut off his arm, and pin him down at the cost of losing his left eye. But because the poison was working its way through his system, he was unable to attempt to deliver the killing blow.

Tengen is able to determine the location of every person within an entire building based solely on the sounds they make. His enhanced hearing is comparable to that of Zenitsu Agatsuma, who also possesses this ability. Because of this skill, he is able to hear noises deep down quickly, and he makes use of it to immediately determine that there are channels of underground tunnels and caves just beneath him when he is searching for Tanjiro Kamado and Daki.

In addition to this, he makes use of his enhanced hearing to keep a close eye on everything that goes on in the Entertainment District in an effort to pinpoint the precise position of the demons that live there. Tengen was also able to utilize his hearing to determine whether or not there were humans still present on a given floor of a building.

Astonishing Speed and Reflexes

Tengen is the Hashira with the quickest running speed, and as a result, he possesses enormous levels of raw speed as well as reflexes. This is frequently demonstrated when he travels so quickly that it appears as though he is teleporting.

His speed is also significantly superior to that of Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke, who were unable to keep up with, let alone comprehend, the lightning-fast motions of the Hashira. His speed is also significantly superior to that of Inosuke. Especially noteworthy is the fact that Tengen was able to decapitate Daki, an Upper-Rank demon before she even had time to process what had just occurred. In addition, he was able to defend himself against both Daki and the real Upper-Rank Six, Gyutaro, despite the fact that he was impaired by a lethal poison that, under normal circ*mstances, would have resulted in the victim’s death in an instant.

Stamina, Endurance, and Strength

Tengen developed a powerful resistance to pain as a result of his upbringing, which consisted of being raised to become a ninja and his own father’s increased attempts to revive their clan by forcing Tengen and his siblings to train even more harshly and painfully than was necessary.

This was seen when he bared little to no reaction at having been caught up in a hail of Kunai knives and being pierced by them without even flinching or showing any form of discomfort. Later on, it was discovered that Tengen had suffered other serious injuries during the fight, such as having his eye and hand-sliced off by Gyutaro. He had also been able to ignore the pain of these injuries. Tengen has incredible physical strength, which is superior to that of his Hashira brothers and sisters. In point of fact, Tengen came in second place in an arm-wrestling competition that included all of the Hashira.

Everything You Need To Know About Tengen Uzui - Demon Slayer - ShonenRoad (9)

Only Gyomei Himejima was able to beat him. Tengen showed his strength multiple times, such as when he was shown carrying Aoi and Naho without much difficulty, and then shortly after, when he knocked Zenitsu and Inosuke unconscious with a single blow to the stomach.

Furthermore, Tengen is able to fight at breakneck speeds while carrying around his enormous Nichirin cleavers, swinging them incessantly to fend off his opponents without much trouble, and being able to hold both of his enormous cleavers at their tips with only two fingers. This enables him to fight at a level of efficiency that is unrivaled. In addition to this, Tengen was able to equal the strength of Gyutaro despite having only one arm following the amputation of his left hand.

Tengen has a reasonable amount of control over his own muscles. Tengen was able to get the drop on Gyutaro during their fight because he used his muscles to stop his heart and momentarily prevent the poison from circulating throughout his body. Gyutaro was under the impression that Tengen had passed away.

Intellect, Intellect, Intellect!

Tengen possesses great judgement as a result of the years of experience he has accumulated as both a ninja and a Demon Slayer. This allows him to make decisions on the fly while engaged in combat with Upper-Rank demons to protect bystanders and minimize the harm done to the environment.

Tengen was able to properly determine the most effective strategy to fight off the Upper-Rank demons and even fooled Gyutaro into thinking he was dead by stopping his own heart to prevent himself from dying from his poison, which managed to give Tengen an advantage against him. Even when he was held back by Gyutaro’s poison, Tengen was able to properly determine the most efficient strategy to fight off the Upper-Rank demons.

Echolocation

Echolocation is a more sophisticated form of hearing that Tengen possesses in addition to his normal hearing. When he was looking for the site of an underground battle, he analyzed the sounds that were reflected and resonated through the air by the walls of the caverns.

Everything You Need To Know About Tengen Uzui - Demon Slayer - ShonenRoad (10)

As a result, he was able to accurately locate the battleground. He was even able to estimate the number of people who were present in the tunnels by listening to the sound that was bouncing from their physical bodies.

Musical Score

This is a technique that Tengen developed using his heightened sense of hearing to work in conjunction with his Sound Breathing. In this technique, Tengen analyses combat maneuvers and deconstructs the rhythm of his enemies’ attacks into sound. He then reads these sounds like sheet music, and the result is that every fight becomes like a song.

Tengen is able to acquire an advantage over his adversary as a result of this because it enables him to gain an awareness of his opponent’s tendencies as well as their blind spots. Tengen, on the other hand, needs a significant amount of time to finish the score. Tengen was able to battle Gyutaro on equal terms once the task was over, despite the fact that he was without his left hand; nevertheless, due to the poison, he was pushed to his limit and was unable to strike at the Upper Rank’s neck.

Shinobi Training

Tengen was a member of the ninja community and came from a family of shinobi before he became a Hashira and joined the Demon Slayer Corps.Tengen was subjected to very severe training, which resulted in the deaths of all of his siblings, with the exception of his younger brother, who evolved into a cruel and ruthless individual.

However, due to the extensive shinobi training that Tengen has undergone, he possesses a significant deal of technical expertise in a variety of weaponry, including kunai and explosives. His training also gave him a high tolerance for pain. It made him resistant to poison, which protected him from Gyutaro’s poison and allowed him to continue fighting despite suffering several wounds and the loss of one of his hands.

Poison Resistance

Everything You Need To Know About Tengen Uzui - Demon Slayer - ShonenRoad (11)

It has been demonstrated that Tengen possesses a high resistance to poison. He was able to continue fighting while under the effects of a poison from Gyutaro that, under normal circ*mstances, would have resulted in the instantaneous death of a person. Tengen was a shinobi in his previous life.

Magnified Stealth

Tengen is exceptionally sneaky; he moves so stealthily that he neither makes a sound nor stirs up any of the air around him. Because of his stealth, he was able to avoid being detected by the heightened senses of scent and touch, respectively, that Tanjiro and Inosuke possessed. Later on, Tengen was able to sneak up on an Upper-Rank demon named Daki and decapitate her without her realizing it.

Tengen's Fighting Style and Equipment

Pro Fighting Style

Tengen is a member of the Hashira division of the Demon Slayer Corps, making him one of the most formidable and accomplished swordsmen in the entire organization.Tengen, in contrast to the majority of Demon Slayers, prefers to employ a dual-wielding swordsmanship approach with his Nichirin Cleavers, employing a sword-wielding style that is similar to using nunchucks.

During the fight against Gyutaro, Tengen demonstrates his extraordinary and one-of-a-kind swordsmanship skills. He is able to adapt to the Upper Rank’s “mantis-like” fighting style and fight toe-to-toe with him for an extended period of time, despite the Upper Rank having more than a century of experience in battle. Tengen is able to employ his expertise with sword-wielding in conjunction with his anti-demon explosives, creating a powerful synergy that makes him an even more formidable opponent.

Everything You Need To Know About Tengen Uzui - Demon Slayer - ShonenRoad (12)

In addition to that, he demonstrated the ability to use his Nichirin Cleavers with one arm only. It has been demonstrated that in addition to standard slashes and swings, Tengen is also capable of spinning his blades by their chain. This whirling action gives him the ability to deflect strikes and instantly strike back in retaliation, with the blades always moving at a high rate of speed.

Out of This World Equipment

Explosive Beads

Tengen carries with him dozens of black beads that, at even the smallest impact, detonate into massive explosions that are able to cause significant damage to the bodies of Upper-Rank demons.

Dual Nichirin Cleavers

Tengen’s flamboyant demeanour is matched with an equally showy collection of weaponry that he takes about him.His primary weapons are two enormous Nichirin cleavers that are amber in colour. The cleavers each have a notch in the sharp ends of their blades and are connected together at the hilt by a metal chain, which gives them a very similar appearance to nunchucks.

He wields these as his primary weapons. It is known that his swords possess a significant quantity of explosive power, and it is said that prior to Tengen’s battle with Upper Rank 6, no one had ever survived a hit from one of his swords.Until that fight, that is.

Everything You Need To Know About Tengen Uzui - Demon Slayer - ShonenRoad (13)

His hilt is circular in form, has four little indentations, and is coloured gold. It has a maroon ring that connects to the centre, and it is surrounded by a green border on the outside. His blades bear the inscription “Destroyer of Demons” in multiple languages. Tengen doesn’t need a sword sheath because his swords are so enormous; rather, he carries them on his back while having them wrapped in linen and carrying them that way.

Standard Kunai

Tengen, like like his three wives, always has dozens of standard black kunai about him. He used these kunai to intimidate Omitsu’s husband into revealing information regarding the disappearance of Zenko and Hinatsuru and to destroy the Obi sash that had kidnapped Hinatsuru.

Breathing Style - Sound

Tengen’s own unique method of breathing that he developed. It would appear that Tengen uses his heightened sense of hearing, his Musical Score skill, his shinobi expertise, as well as his dual Nichirin cleavers, and his anti-demon bombs to create his signature ability, Sound Breathing.

Tengen's Love Interest – His Three Wives: Makio, Suma and Hinatsuru

Everything You Need To Know About Tengen Uzui - Demon Slayer - ShonenRoad (14)

Tengen has a tremendous amount of respect for his wives and a profound affection for each one of them. When Tengen joined the Demon Slayer Corps, he made sure to inform his wife that they needed to prioritize their lives over the mission and that they needed to make sure to return home to him.

He also informed them that they needed to prioritise their lives over the mission. Tengen wished to make it abundantly obvious that the safety of his wife was his first priority in terms of protecting other people.

Tengen kept in regular contact with them through the written medium while they were residing in the Entertainment District. When he suddenly stopped getting their letters, he made the decision to look for them. Tengen grows furious with Inosuke for questioning whether or not his wife is still alive and knocks him out with a single blow to demonstrate that he would not tolerate any disrespect directed against his wives.

Later on, when Tengen finds Hinatsuru hiding out in the Kirimise, he gives her some medication and then inquires as to whether or not she is okay. Tengen reassures her that she did a good job and gives her a close embrace before giving her the instruction to leave the district for her own safety, just as she begins to apologize to him for the assignment that she failed to complete.

When Hinatsuru arrives to help in the battle against Gyutaro, however, she is kidnapped by the Demon, which causes Tengen to go into a panic as he tries to save her. Due to the fact that Tanjiro was successful in rescuing Hinatsuru in the nick of time, Tengen was able to show his appreciation for him and declare that he “owes him one” for rescuing his wife. When Tengen finds the underground cavern, he cuts the obi close to his waist and then apologises to Suma and Makio for being late. He then continues his search for the cavern. As he approaches the women, he gives each of them a friendly pat on the head and reassures them that they have met all of his requirements as his wife. This causes the two of them to start crying when they are reunited with him.

Suma, Makio, and Hinatsuru instantly rush in to provide the first treatment to Tengen after the events of the final battle; however, his wounds look to be too severe for them to repair, which causes them to be concerned. As Suma begins to lament, Makio begins to fear, and Hinatsuru begins to grieve upon seeing the damage he sustained, they all start to grow concerned for his health and well-being. However, when Nezuko is finally successful in curing Tengen of the poison that he had been exposed to, the women are overjoyed at the news that he has been cured, and they weep as they give him a relieved hug.

Trivia Time!!!

  • The family name Tengen is derived from the On’yomi reading of the kanji characters meaning “eaves” and “marrow, pith.” The Onyomi translation of his given name also translates to “beginning, origin,” making it a combination of “heaven” and “beginning.” The word “Tengen” can also refer to the single black dot in the middle of a “Go board.”
  • Tengen came in at position 37th in the first popularity poll with a total of 14 votes and position 13th in the second popularity poll with a total of 3436 votes. These are the results of Tengen’s rankings in the popularity polls.
  • According to Gyutaro, Tengen’s first job was as a Shinobi before he became a Demon Slayer and subsequently a Hashira.
  • Only Tengen and Jigoro Kuwajima are known to have retired from their roles as Demon Slayer and Hashira due to the fact that they were permanently incapacitated rather than because they had reached old age.
  • Both he and Inosuke Hashibira are the only Demon Slayers known to employ the use of two Nichirin Swords rather than a single one.
  • Tengen plays the harmonica in the band “Chic-N-Scruffy Democracy,” which also features Zenitsu (shamisen), Inosuke (taiko), and Tanjiro, according to a parody 4-Koma that was published in Weekly Shonen Jump (vocals). The band’s first single was titled “Melancholy of Explosive Sound Skin and Modern Sense of Smell,” and according to reports, it gave listeners a feeling of lightheadedness and nausea.
  • Polygamy is a tradition in Tengen’s family, and the law requires that anyone who reaches the age of 15 have at least three wives. The clan chief is the one who selects the women, but they make every effort to take compatibility and chemistry into account during the process.
  • Tengen had eight siblings, creating nine children in total. Because of their father’s obsessive instruction, three of his siblings did not survive. After that, the surviving six were split up and made to fight to the death against one another while they were masked. Tengen didn’t become aware of this information until after he had already killed two of his siblings, which infuriated him and prompted him to argue with his father about the senselessness of his father’s principles. Tengen’s other brother, who was still alive at the time, proceeded to kill two more of their brothers, leaving only him and Tengen alive. Tengen pulled out his blade and departed with his wife, abandoning the clan.

Tengen, Tengen, Tengen!!!

Tengen is a man of action who isn’t afraid to enlist the help of others to get things moving. He handles his problems quickly and without hesitation, sending his buddies into the fray with no remorse.

Of course, he cares about them, but he likes to act before their adversaries can. He believes that hard work may achieve anything. These are only a few of the numerous things we can learn by watching Demon Slayers; it is not just a means of entertainment but also a way to improve ourselves and become better human beings.
