James "Jim" Shoptaw Obituary - 2021 (2024)

James H. Shoptaw, age 88, of Dublin, passed away on July 24, 2021.

Mr. Shoptaw was born on March 23, 1933, to the late G. C. and Mabel Shoptaw. During his college years at the University of Georgia, he pledged Sigma Chi fraternity and later welcomed and mentored fraternity brothers generations younger. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club through which he served this community and was also a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Shoptaw loved God and his family and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He and his late wife Rose were faithful members of First Baptist Church in Dublin. With Christ dwelling in their hearts by faith, they rooted and grounded their home in love (Eph. 3:17) and led their children and grandchildren in a close walk with the Lord through God's Word. As Mr. Shoptaw neared his eternal home, God revealed to one of his children Psalm 17:1, "In righteousness, I will see Your face; when I awake I will be satisfied with seeing Your likeness."

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rose Holmes Shoptaw, and grandson, Andrew McQuaig.

Survivors include his daughter, Marty McQuaig (Mike), of Lilburn, GA; son, Jimbo Shoptaw (Helen), of Valdosta, GA; grandchildren, Callie Vann (Torre), of Birmingham, AL, Mallory McQuaig, of Philadelphia, PA, Caleb McQuaig (Brittany), of Hoschton, GA, and James Shoptaw, of Hazard, KY, and Robert Shoptaw, Samuel Shoptaw, and William Shoptaw, all of Valdosta, GA; sister, Helen Howarth of Dublin; brother, George Shoptaw, of Los Gatos, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held on Sunday, August 1, 2021, at 3:00 PM in Dublin Memorial Gardens. Dr. Cliff Morris will officiate.

Pallbearers will be James Shoptaw, Robert Shoptaw, Samuel Shoptaw, and William Shoptaw.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to First Baptist Church of Dublin, 405 Bellevue Avenue, Dublin GA 31021, or to Serenity Hospice, 520 Hillcrest Parkway, Dublin GA 31021.
