Lufthansa Group airlines have added an environmental charge of between €1 and €72 to airfares to cover the cost of switching to less polluting fuels and other green measures.

The surcharge applies to all flights departing from EU countries, Britain, Norway and Switzerland from 1 January 2025. However, it won’t apply to tickets sold before 26 June 2024.

The additional fee, which varies according to route and fare, applies to flights operated by Lufthansa,Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and Swiss.

Rival Air France-KLM introduced an environmental surcharge of €4 to €12 more than two years ago.

So far, no UK-based carrier has announced fuel surcharges and easyJet and Wizz Air told the news organisation Reuters that they had no plans to do so.

However, British Airways and Ryanair did not respond to its request for a comment, added Reuters.

Travel Gossip has also approached Virgin Atlantic for a comment.
