Shaded and Covered Seating at Citi Field (1)

When school is out, and the weather warms up, the Mets play a day game about once a week at Citi Field. An overwhelming majority of these games start at 1:10 p.m.. For many fans, this is an excellent opportunity to soak up the sun and enjoy baseball the way it was meant to be. For others - especially those with family - direct sun is an enemy that needs to be dealt with.

Those looking to stay out of the sun at Citi Field will find shaded seats scattered about the stadium. In fact, for a one o'clock game in the middle of summer, every section in the ballpark will see sunlight for at least a few innings. The only way to stay out of the sun for all nine innings is to choose the correct combination of section and row.

The Best Shaded Seats at Citi Field

Fans heading to Citi Field who are looking for a comfortable afternoon and a great experience should look no further than the Excelsior seats on the 300 Level. Many of these seats offer great protection from the sun, and fans can retreat to the indoor club if the weathertakes a turn for the worst.

The best Excelsior seats for shade are on the third base side. Specifically, rows 3 and above will be shaded for afternoon ballgames in sections 320-333.

There are Excelsior seats in the shade on the first base side of the field, but they often become sunny by the end of the ballgame.

More Shaded Seats on the Third Base Side

Shaded and Covered Seating at Citi Field (2)

Besides the Excelsior Club, there are several other options for shade on the third base side. The sun sets behind this side of the stadium, so seats in the 100 and 500 levels promise good sun protection during the afternoon hours.

  • On the 100 level, the last 10 rows on the third base side are mostly shaded
  • On the 500 level, third base seats in rows 10+ areusually out of the sun

What About Seats on the First Base Side?

The Mets dugout is on the first base side of the field, making this a popular spot for hometown fans. Unfortunately, this side of the field is heavily susceptible to the sun - especially in the later innings.

If you're seeking shade on this side of the field, you will want to choose seats in the very top rows of sections 108-114 or 306-312. While other rows may be shaded at first pitch, only the top rows will be out of the sun for a full nine innings.

Are Any Seats in the Outfield Shaded?

At most ballparks, outfield seats are rarely shaded. But at Citi Field you have a choice to sit in the sun or in the shade for day games.

If you're looking to stay cool, choose outfield seats in left field on the 100, 300 or 500 level. The upper rows of these sections are shaded for all afternoon games, and even the lower rows will eventually see relief.

If you're looking for an outfield seat in the sun, set your sights on the 300 level sections in right field. These are known as the sunny seats at Citi Field. On summer days, these seats will be drenched in sun during day games and even for the first few innings ofnight games.

Covered Seats at Citi Field

If the forecast calls for rain, you'll want to seek out seats covered by the stadium roof or underneath an overhang. These seats are primarily found in the upper rows of select sections. The following areas offer the most amount of coverage:

  • Upper half of rows in outfield sections 134-139, 334-338
  • Upper half of club level sections 306-312 and 326-333
  • Top 5 rows of 500-level sections

Other areas of the ballpark have limited coverage in the highest rows. But be sure toavoid the 400 level and all seats behind home plate (except in the 500 level) as these areas are entirely exposed to the elements.

If you can't find seats with overhead coverage, consider purchasing tickets in one of the multiple club sections at Citi Field. Most club seats will come with access to an indoor area where you can wait out the weather.

  • "Being in the last five rows of the Promenade isn't all bad."

Several of the top rows of the stadium are covered by an overhang, meaning you'll stay dry if the umpires decide to play through the rain.

  • "The Third Base Side Gets the First Shade at Citi Field"

Seats on the third base side at Citi Field will be in the shade first for late afternoon and evening games. Avoid all seats in right field and down the first base line (104-108) if you are sensitive to the sun. The overhang in the Upper Deck is pretty much worthless on the first base side, so choose upper deck seats on the third base side for better shade....More

There is some amount of netting or screening in front of sections 107-128. The height and coverage of netting or screening will vary by section. The netting extends from sections 111-124, and there is a protective fence that extends down the right and left field lines until sections 107 and 128. ...More

    • Where are the best covered seats at Citi Field?

      Asked May 14, 2014

Other than in center field sections and the 300 level in right field, most seating sections will have overhead coverage in the last rows provided by either an overhanging seating deck above, or the small roof at the top of the stadium.
Some of the most well covered seats are found in Sections 102-103 just beyond the right field wall in Rows 8 and higher, as well as Sections 104-105 in Rows 30 and higher. You can also find good covered in left field, when sitting in Rows 12 and higher in Sections 137-139.

Other good covered seating higher in the stadium can be found on the 300 Caesars Level, in Rows 9 and higher in Sections 306-312 and 326-333.

    "Amazing comfort and convenience" -

    Section 121, Row 23, Seat 1

My seat was on the aisle at the right side of the row, and I was ecstatic when I got to the seat and saw the amount of legroom! The seats below (Rows 22 and lower) have a shallower angle to the field, and then the seats begin to elevate more right at Row 23. This gave my row a ton more legroom, great viewing height, and I was just 9 rows down from the concourse as well!

The view of the field is amazing, as well as the views of the center field scoreboard. Very close to the visitor dugout for great views of the players.

It was a bright summer day, and the only downfall was the amount of sun during the early innings for a 1:10 start. We began to get more shade during the later innings (around 2:30 or so), but had a lot of sun to kick things off at Citi Field.

Overall though, an absolutely amazing place to watch a baseball game!

"Terribly Sunny and No Scoreboard Views" -

    Section 339, Row 13, Seat 1

For a night game these seats might be a pretty good place to sit, but I will avoid these at all costs for future day games. The roof of the 500 level provides excellent cover and shade for all the 300 level sections in left field, except for Section 339!

I was in the sun for the entire day, while the seats just to my right in Section 338 looked ridiculously comfortable in the shade. Its impossible to see the center field videoboard, and don't expect to follow anything up against the left field wall.

One thing I did like about this area was smaller atmosphere. There is only one stairway and one elevator to get to these sections from the field level, so it feels much less crowded and restroom lines were very short.

"The Most Dangerous Seats for Young Children!" -

    Section 519, Row 9, Seats 5 & 6

I enrolled my 2 g'sons in the Mets Kids Club & these terrible seats were sent to us. No one in their right mind would ever bring young children to this area. Why are these seats designated for young children? They are extremely dangerous, not to mention, in the direct sunlight on a 90 deg day. This is the worst way to expose young children to the sport of baseball.

Citi Field or the NY Mets should be very ashamed to offer these tickets to children . Be assured this will be or first & very last visit to Citi Field. We'll watch the NY Mets in the safety of our home. Who were these seats for?...no one in their right mind !!! I would not have checked any stars, but you forced me to. They did not deserve that one star.

    "Shady, Fun Views" -

    Section 506, Row 11, Seat 24

I had read that Row 11 is where the coverage starts on the 500 level, and that was spot on. We were in the shade for the majority of the game (until about the 8th inning) for a hot summer day game.

Views of the field were surprisingly decent from the seats as we could see every area of the field. What made the views even more fun was our line of sight to the Flushing Bay in the background of left center field, and the steady traffic of airplanes taking off almost right over the ballpark. Videoboard views were great as well, so even though we were higher up we could always catch the replays for the smaller details.

For the money, these aisle seats were a great value with fun overall views at Citi Field.

"Avoid the front row on the 500 level" -

    Section 534, Row 1, Seat 1

Both the safety railing and walkway hand rail were right in my view of the infield, making for a very frustrating view at the ballpark. Left field corner or deep on the left field wall - no chance of seeing anything there.

Scoreboard views are incredibly difficult, and be prepared with sunscreen during a day game as you see a healthy amount of sun.

I usually try like sitting near the entryway to a section for quick trips to the concourse, and I always love sitting on an aisle, but that is a recipe for disaster here in Section 534 Row 1 Seat 1.

    "Up Against A Wall" -

    Section 128, Row 27, Seat 9

At Seat 9 I was right up against a wall in Section 128 Row 27. Views to the field were decently clear for the most part, although I could not see the visitors dugout or deep in the left field corner. So while the wall just to my right didn't terribly limit the view, it was still a bit distracting at times.

Getting in and out of the seat was tough as there was only one aisle to use, located to the left of Seat 1. The seats were just barely under cover from the deck above, however there was a good amount of shade throughout the mid June day game.

    Four seats with the aisle.

    Section 506, Row 11, Seat 23

Used the RateYourSeats shade finder to find seats on Father's Day. Heat index in the 90s, not a cloud in the sky, and I'm perfectly comfortable! Two rows lower and I'd be soaked with sweat.

To get the shade you do have to sit pretty high up. So it's a birds eye view, but you can see the whole field, the videoboard and even the water - awesome!

Really like the view of home plate. Great angle. Seeing left field is tricky - you can't see balls hit deep down the line.

The row is about a million seats long. Liked having the aisle, but you will have to get up for other guests. Otherwise, you're about 6 seconds from concessions and the men's room.
