FO Obituaries DiMatteo built supermarket chain 50 Kenan Heise STAFF WRITER Dominick DiMatteo 75, chairman of Dominick's Finer Foods saw the giant food yo chain grow from a West Side "Ma Var and Pa" store to 101 retail food outlets in the Chicago area. Aft Affectionately called "Mr. by his employees, he was 7 years old when opened his their first father grocery and at mother Ohio Street and Avers Avenue in 1925. Mr. DiMatteo died of lung cancer Sunday at his Palatine home.

Mr. DiMatteo was known for his humanitarian efforts and his innovative ideas in the field of food merchandising. In 1989, Eunice we Shriver presented him ho with the Caritas Society Award in so recognition of his company's efin forts for the developmentally disabled. In 1990, he was the first inV ductee into the Merchandising Executives Club of Chicago Hall of Fame. 32 His first tasks working in his store after school scrubbing the butcher blocks and sweeping the floors.

At age 16, he joined his father as a partner and was responsible for a al second family store at Ohio Street and Central Park Avenue. In 1950, Dominick's chain opened its first large-scale supermarket at 6900 W. North Ave. It had 14,000 square feet. The firm now employs 18,000 people with annual sales of $2 billion.

A typical Dominick's store in the 1990s contains 35,000 different items, including 1,200 Dominick's private label products. Its outlets, Dominick's Finer Foods and Omni, are in 70 Chicago-area communities. Among more recent innovations Mr. DiMatteo introduced have been a self check-out service at the Wheaton Store; meat and poultry presentation using sections listed as traditional, lean and saver; and an order and catering service. Mr.

DiMatteo was on the board of the Villa Scalabrini Home for the Aged and formerly on the board of the Food Market Institute, the foremost food industry organization in the country. He was chosen "Man of the Year" by the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans. "We have lost a Chicago original," Mayor Richard M. Daley said. "Dominick DiMatteo Jr.

personifies the realization of the American Dream. He was a great Dominick DiMatteo Jr. businessman, husband and father. My sincere sympathy and condolences go to his employees, associates and, most of all, to his family." Survivors include his wife, Ethel; four daughters, Mary Ellen, Donna Owen, Margaret Bedford and Katherine Crane; a son, James; a sister; 14 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
