Does anyone know if the storm affected the emergency ferry from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe? I may attempt to make it to Buxton tomorrow.

I know yesterday evening they left early on the 4PM run to avoid the weather on the Rodanthe side. If it is anything like our neighbor went thru bring a big thermos of coffee and a few sandwiches for the wait.

No, they are running on schedule if you can call it that. There was overwash at Mirlo this continuing this evening BTW. But the ferry system is running fine.

If you can wait till Sat and have 4x4 NCDOT plans on reopening 12 for 4x4 access

Weather permitting, NCDOT plans to open N.C.12 to four-wheel drive traffic by noon on Saturday, Nov. 10. Initially, these vehicles will only have access to one lane of the highway and Bonner Bridge, and in some parts, they will travel over sand. In addition, NCDOT will close the four-wheel drive route from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for the first few days to ensure motorist safety during the overnight hours. Once crews open both lanes of the temporary bridge, the department will allow four-wheel drive traffic 24 hours per day.

Even if the Sonic had an AWD option, the limited ground clearance and small tires would be a problem.
Same goes for most AWD crossovers and Subies; they have small ground clearance, and small diameter tires. An AWD Ford Escape or similar would probably be marginal due to small tire diameter. Just IMO, I would not try it or plan on it in a car-based AWD, even if the NCDOT let you try. (BTW, this is from direct experience with a small, low AWD on the beach! NO success!)

I would be on the alert for this timing of the 4WD access to NC12 to maybe change, as they check over the N'easter impacts. The annoucement does say " Weather permitting...." Be ready to change plans.

Also, since only 1 lane will be avialable for 4WD travle at first, I wonder if they will have a pilot truck leading a pack of 4WD vehicles in one direction for a while, and then leading a pack in the other direction, back and forth. In that case, be ready for some waits that will be up to 45-50 minutes, I would estimate.
